Abou Diaby Pulls Arsenal Through

Abou Diaby, Arsenal’s center midfielder from Cote d’Ivoire,  was a shining star in this weekend’s game against Portsmouth in the United Arab Emirates.  Diaby led the charge, fielding two goals in the first half to put Arsenal in the lead. Portsmouth rallied to score a goal in the first half to keep things lively and keep them in the running.

Didier the Diva

It must really suck to be Didier Drogba at the moment. Just take a look at the past few months in his life: Projected winner of 2007 CAF African Footballer of the Year award, Drogba sent his wife to represent him at the ceremony and the award was subsequently given to Mali’s Fredi Kanoute. Predicted by many so-called pundits to run away with the 2008 African Nations Cup, Drogba and his Elephants were mightily humbled 4-1 in the semi final by eventual champions Egypt, and lost 4-2 to Ghana in the Third-place match.

Quincy Opts For Birmingham

Quincy Owusu-Abeyie

Ghana international Quincy Owusu-Abeyie has moved to English Championship side Birmingham City from Russian giants Spartak Moscow. The 22-year-old moves to St. Andrews on an initial loan deal worth about $3 million, which will run until January 2009. The Blues will then have the option of extending the deal to run through to the end of the season.

Charity Match to feature Great African Soccer Players

Frederic Omar Kanoute

Sevilla FC’s Malian international striker, Frederic Kanoute, in association with the United Nations Agency for Children (UNICEF), will sponsor a match at the Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium in Seville to raise funds to fight infant mortality in Africa. It will also raise money for a ‘children’s city’ in Bamako.
