Equatorial Guinea Assume Mantle as Africa’s Top Women’s Team
By winning the 6th African Women Championship, hosts Equatorial Guinea not only became the second country in history so to do, but also destroyed the old order along the way. Nigeria’s has always dominated the women’s scene, with Cameroon, Ghana, and South Africa providing occasional competition. When the draw for the tournament was made, and the Guineans avoided three of the aforementioned foursome – Nigeria, Ghana and South Africa – the hosts breathed a sigh of relief, but quickly remembered that Cameroon still posed a threat in the Malabo-based Group A.
Super Falcons to Clash With Black Queens
Nigeria will take on great rivals Ghana in their opening match of the African Women’s Championship in November. The pair have been drawn together in Group B of the tournament, which is hosted by Equatorial Guinea. South Africa and Tunisia are the other two teams in the group. Group A features the hosts, plus Cameroon, Mali, and Congo-Brazzaville. Nigeria’s Super Falcons have won every edition of the championship so far, but they failed to make it to the knock-out stages of the recent Olympic tournament in Beijing.
Let The Games Begin
Euphoria swept the continent of Africa following Nigeria’s dazzling triumph in the men’s football competition at Atlanta 1996. This feeling was further cemented four years later as Cameroon repeated the feat. Africans—God bless us—have come to regard winning the competition as a birthright of some sorts.
