Sarkodie, Camp Mulla, Wizkid, Mi Casa and D’Banj nominated for 2012 MTV European Music Awards

D'banjMTV has unveiled the nominees for its annual MYV European Music Awards (EMA) with reigning pop princesses Rihanna and Taylor Swift topping the list with six and five nods respectively. Africa’s hottest contemporary artists could also be in the frame for an EMA award, as Sarkodie, Camp Mulla, Wizkid, Mi Casa and D’Banj fight it out for a slot in the Worldwide Act category, where they will compete against their peers in India and the Middle East (from Monday 15 October).  The final Worldwide Act nominees from each region (Europe, Latin America, North America, Asia Pacific and Africa/India/Middle East) will be announced the week of 30 October and the winner will be named at the show in Frankfurt.

Other notable EMA nominees include Lady Gaga, Carly Rae Jepsen, fun., Lana Del Rey, Nicki Minaj, Jay Z and Kanye West, who are each up for three EMA nominations, while Green Day, Gotye, Pitbull, Rita Ora, Flo Rida, Muse, Arctic Monkeys, Jack White and One Direction are up for two awards. MTV will announce EMA performers and presenters at a later date.

9ice wins MOBO Award

9ice1.jpgNigeria’s Yoruba R&B sensation, Abolore Akande popularly known as 9ice was declared as the ‘Best African Act’ at this year’s Music of Black Origin (MOBO) Awards. His music is mostly a blend of R&B and Afro-hip hop mixed with the local Yoruba language. According to him, his aim is to become a reference point for Nigerian artists everywhere.

The coveted award ceremony is held annually in the United Kingdom to recognize artists of all race and nationality performing the music of black origin. Kanya King, founder of a former dancer award established the MOBO award in 1995.

2008 MOBO (Music Of Black Origin) Awards Great for Estelle

This has definitely been Estelle’s year and she was rewarded with two MOBO Awards for best UK female, and best song for her hit “American Boy”. Leona Lewis’ won best video for ‘Bleeding Love‘ and best album for the multi-million selling “Spirit“.

A bevy of names showed up for the awards including Taio Cruz, John Legend, Billy Ocean, Djibril Cisse, Grace Jones, Melanie Brown, and Chipmunk.  This annual award show is growing in stature and founder Kanya King said, “I hope that we can inspire a new generation of talent to follow their lead and fulfill their dreams.”

This Day cuts Naomi Campbell, Local Acts from Program

Why, oh why, can’t we be on time? This Day had it’s highly publicized show in Nigeria over the weekend and boasted a roster of great names. Unfortunately most of them were not showcased as the show started 5 hours late. Africans actually waited 5 hours to watch the show….we are incredibly tolerant.

Rihanna and Jay-Z perform at Thisday FestivalOr maybe it was the fact that each person paid up to 60,000 naira (about $580) to get a seat. Either way, I know I would be demanding my money back, a freebie, or a chance to go backstage and get autographs! Give me something!
