Up Close and Personal with Mpho Skeef
This UK-based, South African-born singer and producer, Mpho Skeef, is currently the gem within the UK music industry. Born in the apartheid era to a South African music legend, Sipho “Hotsticks” Mabuse, and a school teacher mother, Mpho has a full story to tell, from her hard journey in SA to her new beginnings in the UK. Now signed to a top British recording label, Parlophone Records, Mpho’s hard labor as a striving artist is finally paying off.

The 2009 Los Angeles Film Festival brought out some great talent including Jean-Marie Teno, the Cameroonian director who was screening his film, Sacred Places. Jonathan Amayo from Mode-HQ was on hand to answer technical questions during the Tech Talk segment of the festival. TV personality, Sal Masekela showed his support for musician Bill Withers during his performance with his wife, Kori.
Nollywood is making its mark in Hollywood with movies highlighting the making of Nollywood movies, and programs that celebrate the industry. Samir Malla, Lancelot Oduwa Imasuen and Ben Addelman were in a photoshoot for Nollywood Babylon at the Sundance. » Read more…

Estelle and Busta Rhymes shot a video for “World Go Round” in New York….hmm….I think we should start to call this segment Estelle watch. She is everywhere. Lemar took some time out from fatherhood to take in a premiere movie–”Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen”. Ozwald Boateng was at the same premiere with his children (they are adorable).
King Sunny Ade was one of the feature artists at the Bonnaroo Music Festival, and he also performed at the Playboy Jazz Festival. Jamie Foxx and Prince Ade Bamiro were also at the jazz festival celebrating the great music. » Read more…

Well, looks like Wale was partying and performing at the same party as L’il Kim while Tunde Adebimpe was performing at Central Park Summerstage in New York.
Of course we have to mention Estelle who was spotted at the Oceana, Nautica & Vanity Fair Celebrate World Oceans Day. She was also spotted at the National Best Friends day hosted by BFF Entertainment at Times Square Alliance Building in New York City, and at the HOT 97 Summer Jam. Angel Melaku a.k.a. Weekend Buzz
We haven’t heard anything about Estelle for a while. She has been a little under the weather. Maybe she was still shaken up by the fact that she was in the same area where Dolla got shot. Anyway, she is none the worse for wear, and busy marketing herself in true Estelle style. She performed at the Museum of Modern Art, helped H&M highlight Fashion Against AIDS, and performed at the Grammy Celebration Concert Tour. Yup, she’s back!
Rapper, Wale, performed at the Sway and .Tel Pre Movie Awards Celebration and Korto Momolu helped aspiring designers realize their dreams at the 1st Annual African Fashion Designer’s Competiton. Alek Wek looked fabulous in yellow but was sporting an orange cast at the 2009 Veuve Clicquot Manhattan Polo Classic. Seal was in Turkey at the Mardan Palace Hotel in Antalya, Turkey to perform at the grand opening. Overall, it was not too hectic a weekend. Let’s see what next weekend brings.

Estelle is back! She is busy running around attending events around the country. I don’t know anyone who works as hard as she does.
Idris Elba is having a stellar year already. His new movie ‘Obsessed‘, filmed with Beyonce Knowles, was the highest grossing film taking in $28.5 million in ticket sales for Sony Corporation. It beat ‘Mean Girls‘ for the for the best last-April-weekend opening ever. He was also sighted at a pre-draft party with Osi Umenyiora and Michael Strahan, and at the British Academy Television Awards. » Read more…

Joy Denalane was at the Echo 2009 awards and Alek Wek was at the London Fashion week doing her thing (looking fabulous as always) in MOMO wear. Jourdan Dunn also modeled the MOMO line.
Former Botswana President, Festus Mogae, and designer Ozwald Boateng showed up to support Julianne Moore’s Diamonds in Africa cause. An Obama artist brought Damon Dash and his son out to party, and Idris Elba supported an AIDS cause.
Africa’s 2009 51st Grammy Awards Winners
With no doubt, the biggest highlights for the past weekend were the 2009 51st Grammy Awards ceremony, were big names from all genres of the music industry came together in celebration of the legacy that is attached with the Grammy’s.
Some celebrities turned heads with their chosen attire whilst some sent profound messages to the masses about “what not to wear”. Despite all the Grammy happenings of the night, from the rocking performances to the many winners, my proudest moment of the night was witnessing two Africans take home awards. » Read more…

Samantha Mumba was at the launching of Afro-Samurai for XBox and Playstation 3. Boris Kodjoe and Idris Elba were spotted in the Bahamas at Michael Jordan’s celebrity invitational golf tournament. I am sure many women would have given their eye teeth to be there!
Estelle sang at the official John Legend concert after party where she had her birthday bash. Akon celebrated the inauguration with BET in style. Angel was out and about celebrating the inauguration too. » Read more…
