2011 Ghana Music Awards nominees revealed

trigmatcCharter House, organizers of the annual Ghana Music Awards has unveiled the much-awaited list of nominees for the 2011 Ghana Music Awards at a well attended ceremony at the Golden Tulip Hotel in Accra. Singer Kwabena Kwabena had 9 mentions in total with 3 being as a result of collaborations on the songs of other artists, while gospel songstress Cecelia Marfo pulled in 7 nominations. Rapper, Trigmatic lead the hiphop/hiplife force with a total of 7 nominations.

Ghana’s fastest rapper tops Ghana Music Awards nominations

sarkodie__06_300x188Africa has not been left out of the global surge of hip hop music and culture; and the strong presence of rap music/hip hop popularly known as hiplife in the nominations for the 11th Annual Ghana Music Awards proves the growing impact on Ghanaian music.

The nominations were announced on February 26, and Sarkodie, touted as the fastest rapper led the pack with 8 nominations including artist of the year and song of the year. Fellow hiplife artists Ayigbe Edem, 4X4, and Bradez had 6, 5 and 5 nominations respectively.

Ja Rule Who?

Kwaw Kesse, Ghana’s self proclaimed King of the Streets has described Ja Rule as a spent force with no relevance in today’s hip-hop world. “Ja Rule isn’t hot any more”, Kwaw Kesse said recently in a TV interview when he was asked about performing with Ja Rule. The two recently shared the stage at the Ghana Music Award beach party and even though Kwaw admitted that Ja Rule was able to excite the crowd, he still maintained that Ja Rule wasn’t hot. “Ghanaians are tired of Ja Rule”, he added.

Ja Rule promises to thrill Ghanaian fans

New York rapper, Ja Rule will join Nigerian R&B duo P-Square and Kenya’s hottest contemporary artist, Nameless in thrilling music lovers at the upcoming 2008 Ghana Music Awards Festival in Accra. The three-day festival starts with the Ghana Music Awards Gala Night on April 23. This will be a ceremony to honour deserving artists, producers, distributors, instrumentalists, video directors and other industry player for their contributions in the year under review. Special lifetime achievements awards will also be presented at the gala on the backdrop of live band highlife music, over a three course dinner.
