John Legend to celebrate Women’s Day in South Africa in August

Yes ladies, you heard right.   John Legend is going to be in South Africa in August to perform in honor of Women’s Day. Others who will share the stage include Unathi Msengana, and multiple South African Music Award (SAMA) winning outfit, MiCasa.
John LegendMinnie Dlamini, the show’s MC, tweeted that this show will be more intimate than his others.

General access tickets are available for R900 while VIP costs R1400. For a more exclusive experience, VVIP tickets / hospitalities packages are also available at R1750 via special bookings on 011 844 1103.

South African musicians unhappy about FIFA music line-up

It seems the South African musicians are unhappy about not being included in the World Cup festivities.  Many of the local artists were upset that the lineup did not include more local talent in it’s roster.

FIFA’s Secretary General, Jerome Valke, said that, “This is an international event, we need to attract audiences from around the world with big global names.”  The artists were told that the concert was not the only arts event and they had other options for inclusion.

John Legend and Keri Hilson to invade South Africa

Thanks to Twitter for the immediate news release. John Legend has confirmed his South African tour, scheduled to take place in mid-October 2009. It will start off in Cape Town,  then on to Johannesburg, and end in Durban.

Celebrity Sightings

The 2009 Los Angeles Film Festival brought out some great talent including Jean-Marie Teno, the Cameroonian director who was screening his film, Sacred Places.  Jonathan Amayo from Mode-HQ was on hand to answer technical questions during the Tech Talk segment of the festival.  TV personality, Sal Masekela showed his support for musician Bill Withers during his performance with his wife, Kori.

Nollywood is making its mark in Hollywood with movies highlighting the making of Nollywood movies, and programs that celebrate the industry. Samir Malla, Lancelot Oduwa Imasuen and Ben Addelman were in a photoshoot for Nollywood Babylon at the Sundance.

Slum Village to invade SA with their ‘I Luv Hip-Hop’ music series tour

Slum Village is a two piece Detroit band consisting of T3 and Elzhi, that emerged in the music scene in the late 1990′s. African Celebrities Out and About

Samantha Mumba was at the launching of Afro-Samurai for XBox and Playstation 3.  Boris Kodjoe and Idris Elba were spotted in the Bahamas at Michael Jordan’s celebrity invitational golf tournament. I am sure many women would have given their eye teeth to be there!

Estelle sang at the official John Legend concert after party where she had her birthday bash. Akon celebrated the inauguration with BET in style.  Angel was out and about celebrating the inauguration too.

Weekend Buzz

Some celebrities received honors, while others celebrated awards and achievements. CNN Heroes had a large number of Africans who proved that heroes come from every continent in the world, and make a difference wherever they are.

Take Viola Vaughn and her husband, Jazz musician Sam Sanders.They made the decision to emigrate to Senegal with their family, to provide their five grandchildren with an international, multilingual and multicultural education and ended up making a difference for children in the town they lived in.Their organization, 10,000 Girls, is helping to make this happen.
