The First Annual African Music Awards
Musically speaking, 2008 has been a year full of firsts; first it was the MTV African Music Awards, which was a big success, and, in a couple of weeks, live in London on December 27 2008, the African Music Awards (AMA) organization will present the first African Music Awards.
Aimed at promoting the diverse and rich African culture through music, it will be televised to over 10 million viewers worldwide with performances from the Continent’s giants. The AMA organizers are making sure no stones are left unturned as they strive to make the event a night to top all nights and use the award show to raise funds for the HIV/AIDS orphans in Africa. » Read more…
Jamelia – Soaring to new heights everyday
Jamelia has been scorching the music scene since she impressed the Parlophone Records execs with self-written acappella songs. Her three studio albums have produced eight UK top ten singles, garnered her four MOBO awards, a Q award, and six Brit award nominations. Her single, ‘I Do‘ tore up the charts, made the UK top forty, and held top twenty positions in France and Sweden. Subsequent songs have been chart successes, including ‘Money’, ‘Call Me‘, and ‘Boy Next Door‘.
Jamelia was recently spotted at the Cosmopolitan Ultimate Women of the Year Awards (she served as one of the panel judges along with Lemar) where fellow musician, Estelle won the Ultimate Believe In Yourself Award. She won the 2007 Birmingham’s Most Stylish Personality award (this award is for folks born in Birmingham, her hometown). » Read more…

Doing it for West Africa
Without a doubt, Ghanaian-born UK rapper, Sway DaSafo, and Nigerian born UK R&B singer, Lemar, are the best in their respective fields as far is the UK music scene is concerned. So what happens when the two collaborate on a song? – A masterpiece even better than R. Kelly and Jay Z’s ‘Best of Both Worlds’. Ha-ha! That is certainly how I felt when I saw the video for ‘Saturday Night Hustle’. The video is well put together and the music, um, the music is refreshing!
Maybe I am about to exaggerate a little but I can’t stop thinking that the video aptly tells the story of how Africans and blacks in general have to get their hustle on just to survive in the west. I am sure many of our brothers and sisters in the Diaspora can relate with that. Whichever way you look at it, Sway and Lamar are doing Africa proud and this one goes to West Africa!
And the 2008 MOBO Awards Nominees Are……….
The Music Of Black Origin (MOBO) awards have grown to be one of the biggest awards in the music industry today. This London-based ceremony is dedicated to music of black origin, from urban to hip hop, R&B, gospel, and reggae. These awards are also a way to acknowledge artsits for their work around the world through their music.
Since their first year, these awards have officially made their mark, bringing together artists from the American, European, and African industry all in one stage. This year Africa is highly represented with more artists nominated. Some have been nominated in several categories. » Read more…
