DSC_9042Ghanaian star actress, Jackie Appiah is certainly having a good year. She recently followed her African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) nod for best actress in a lead role with the City People Entertainment Award for best Actress in Ghana. The award which celebrates movies, music and comedy was held on July 18 at the 10 Degrees Event Centre in Lagos, Nigeria.

African Movie Academy Award winners visit Ghana Vice President

The Ghanaian winners of the 2010 African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) have presented their awards to the Vice President, John Mahama at the Castle, Osu. The group included Mabel Germain, Elorm Adablah, Adjetey Annang, Naa Ashorkor Mensah Doku, Lydia Forson, Akorfa E. Asiedu and Ken Attoh. Stakeholders of the African movie industry were on tenterhooks on March 6, as all attention shifted to Accra, Ghana for the announcement of nominees for the 2010 Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA). The glitzy nominations party brought together some of the crème in the industry from all over Africa to celebrate the growth of African movies in the past year and to observe which movies, actors and technical players were deemed fit by the Academy for laurels this year.

And for me, this very much represented the general feel-good theme of the movie; it is one for laughs and not taking life too seriously.

Shirley Frimpong-Manso’s Perfect Picture

Shirley Frimpong-Manso, a film writer/director/producer is emerging as the biggest force to reckon with in terms of quality Ghanaian movies. She has already produced two amazing movies that have enjoyed critical and commercial success across Africa, Europe and North America.  She stunned movie buffs with the amazing picture and story quality of ‘Life and Living It’, and confirmed her grasp on the industry with the much-talked drama, ‘Scorned’, a movie about a woman fighting to keep her sanity in a marriage of abuse. The lead actress in that movie, Lydia Forson has been nominated for the most promising actor award in the 2009 Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA).
