Didier the Diva
It must really suck to be Didier Drogba at the moment. Just take a look at the past few months in his life: Projected winner of 2007 CAF African Footballer of the Year award, Drogba sent his wife to represent him at the ceremony and the award was subsequently given to Mali’s Fredi Kanoute. Predicted by many so-called pundits to run away with the 2008 African Nations Cup, Drogba and his Elephants were mightily humbled 4-1 in the semi final by eventual champions Egypt, and lost 4-2 to Ghana in the Third-place match.
Al Ahly to Face Coton Sport in CAF Champions League Final
Egyptian side Al Ahly will meet Coton Sport of Cameroon in the final of the 2008 African Champions League after beating Enyimba 1-0 in Cairo on Saturday.
Five-time champions Al Ahly, who will be in the final of Africa’s premier club tournament for the eighth tournament, become only the third side to reach four straight finals. DR Congo’s TP Englebert Mazembe were the first to do so, winning two finals between 1967 and 1970, while Guinea’s Hafia Conakry also won two of four finals, between 1975-1978. Muntari Completes Move to Italian Giants
Sulley Muntari has completed his move to Inter Milan from Portsmouth and has signed a four-year deal with the Italian champions. The Ghana international had firmly established himself as a key member of Harry Redknapp’s side following his $14 million move from Udinese last summer and helped the Fratton Park side lift the FA Cup in May. He also scored five goals in 33 appearances.
Man Utd. Edge Pompey 2-1 in Abuja
Fans of Premier League champions, Manchester United, watched the Red Devils end their tour of Africa with a win over Premier League rivals, Portsmouth, in Nigeria. The match heralded the first meeting between two English Premier League sides in west Africa, but the 60,000 Abuja National Stadium was less than half full with ticket prices thought to be at an exorbitant premium. Pompey had Nigerian John Utaka on display, but his compatriot, Nwankwo Kanu, missed out due to injury. Imposing central midfielder, Papa Bouba Diop, of Senegal was also on parade, though his regular partner, Ghana’s Sulley Muntari, was absent as he completes his transfer to Inter Milan.
