Breaking New Ground
With a vast experience in Nigeria’s growing entertainment industry, ranging from comedy to fashion, Jafextra could best be described as the ultimate entertainer. As if that was not enough, he has now added music to his impressive resume. I met him recently in Accra to find out a little bit about this new dimension to him. For me it was particularly refreshing to know that Jafextra wants to stay true to his tradition at a period when most of his colleagues have become Americanised or ‘Oyibonised’ as he puts it. Africa doesn’t need Usher knock-offs (P-Square) or KRS-1 incarnates (Mode-9). Ha-ha!!

Nas, Freshly Ground, Tic Tac and others Shake Nigeria
Watch out MTV, African music channels are giving you a run for your money. Following a great tradition that was started by Channel O, African music videos are now getting the recognition they deserve. The Soundcity Music Video Awards (SMVA) is the newest kid on the block. The first ever SMVA took place recently at the Shell Hall of the prestigious MUSON Centre. Soundcity is Nigeria’s first and foremost lifestyle, music and entertainment television channel and the award ceremony lived up to its billing. It was filled with all the glitz, glamour and quality entertainment. The Awards was telecast live on cable and terrestrial television, with commentaries on radio transmitted across Africa, the United States, the United Kingdom, and some other parts of Europe. US hip hop legend, Nas was on hand to thrill patrons with exciting performances of his hit songs one after the other. There were also amazing performances from the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Musical Society of Nigeria, Tony Teteuila, Eedris Abdulkareem and Eddy Montana of the Remedies. South Africa’s mega group, Freshly Ground, Ghana’s Tic Tac, P Square, D’Banj, Don Jazzy and the Mo’Hits Crew, Nato C, Ikechukwu, Sasha, Kaffy, and Question Mark All Stars also brought their exceptional talents to bear on the event. It was hosted by D’Banj, Ashionye and fast-rising comedian AY.
