Any individual who has studied South African history can positively state that Rugby has been, and still is, a very important element of the South African journey.  It has been more than century but I find it very hard for any soul to forget the major sport event that united South African people as whole thanks to the then newly elected and first black president, Nelson Mandela, and the then South African Rugby Captain, Francois Pienaar, played in the movie by Matt Damon.

Celebrity Sightings

Former President, Bill Clinton, hosted a gala dinner for Nelson Mandela that attracted a large celebrity turnout.  Guests included Morgan Freeman, Donna Karan, Alfre Woodward, Karolina Krukova, Keisha Whitaker, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Chris Chameleon, Freshly Ground, Emmanuel Jal, Loyiso, Sipho Mabuse, Vusi Mahlasela, Angelique Kidjoe, Thandiswa Mazwai, Baaba Mal, Akon, Russell Simmons, Suzanna Owiyo, Gloria Gaynor (of ‘I Will Survive’ fame), and Josh Groban.

Mandela’s wife, Graca Machel, was also in attendance, with his daughter and his grand-daughter. UK’s Prime Minister, Gordon Brown delivered a video address to the gathering, expressing his support for a Mandela Day. » Read more…

Matt Damon Battles Gale Winds in South Africa For Charity

Matt Damon, currently filming his latest movie in South Africa, took some time out to ride in the 110km Cape Argus Cycle Tour with his brother to raise money for Make A Difference.  Make A Difference is a charity that encourages, supports and recognizes 13 to 25 year olds who want to take action and volunteer their time for the benefit of others.
