Mic Check: Hip-hop from North Africa and the Middle East

The Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) is producing a hip-hop show with several prominent rappers from the North Africa and Middle East, including Amkoullel of Mali. The show, Mic Check: Hip-hop from North Africa and the Middle East is scheduled for March 9, 2013 at 7:30 p.m. at BAM.

Colors of the Nile International Film Festival (CNIFF) in Addis Ababa this November

Kenyan and South African Photographers win prestigious Photoafrica awards in Spain

June 12th, Tarifa, Spain – Photographers from South Africa and Kenya won prestigious awards at fourth Photoafrica contest, which took place within 8th African Film Festival of Tarifa. The first place award, endowed with €1,500, went to Jessica MacLeod from South Africa for her photograph titled “You see a shack, I see my house”.  The second place award, endowed with €1,000, went to James Muriuki from Kenya for the photograph  titled “44”.  Third place, endowed with €500, went to Mimi Cherono from Kenya with the photograph titled “Khusi and the Giraffes”.

It was incredibly difficult to decide about winners, as the fourth edition of Photoafrica experienced a record number of over 400 entries and once again proved the unique potential and quality of African photographers”, says Pablo Juliá, chairman of the jury and director of the Andalusian Center Of Photography.

Khaleed Leon Thomas is Khleo to you music fans

Some of you may remember the quirky little kid, Zero, from the film “Holes“  or Mixed Mike from “Rollbounce”.  He also starred in ‘Walking Tall’ opposite Dwayne Johnson (The Rock) in 2004 and ‘Remember the Daze’ starring Amber Heard in 2007. His real name is Khaleed Leon Thomas and he is an actor, singer, rapper and entertainer.  Khleo’s mother is Moroccan and his father is African-American.

Khaleed raps under the name Khleo and has proven to be extremely versatile. He is very good friends with Bow Wow and collaborated with him and other rappers and musicians on an album titled ‘Just A Sample‘.  He made a video for one of the songs on the album titled ‘Lights Out and it has been very well received’.  You  might have caught him in cameos on several Bow Wow videos including ‘Fresh Azimiz‘, ‘Outta Ma System‘, and with Soulja Boy on  ‘Pretty Boy Swag‘.

Esperance win 2008 Tunisia FA Cup

Esperance win 2008 Tunisia FA CupHicham Aboucherouane struck twice as Esperance beat Etoile du Sahel 2-1 to win the Tunisian FA Cup on Saturday. The Moroccan international gave Esperance a 12th minute lead after a defesive mix-up by the Etoile rearguard. The lead was short-lived, as Mehdi Meriah equalized within five minutes for last year’s African Champions League winners. However, Aboucherouane was to have the last word. With 11 minutes left on the clock, he pounced to score the winner and ensure a record breaking 12th cup success for the Blood and Gold.
