Not only has she been nominated for both the “Artist of the Year” and the “Best Female Act” at the 2008 MTV Africa Music Awards, but Asa was also nominated for the “Best African Act” at the 2008 MOBO Awards beside trailblazing artists like Estelle and Dizzee Rascal. Born in Paris but Nigerian-raised, Asa is a product of two Nigerian parents who, when she was only two, returned back to settle in the “New York City” of Nigeria–Lagos.

As a child growing up with a music lover for a father, she listened to the likes of Fela Kuti, Sunny Ade, Bob Marley, Aretha Franklen, Marvin Gaye, Lagbaja, and Ebenezer Obey. It was obviously time destined for her to answer to her musical call. Well, it’s official. The MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMA) with Zain, have started their hunt for the best in African music, and the excitement is hitting a frenzied pitch. Music of Black Origin (MOBO) award winning DJ and television presenter, Trevor Nelson, is slated to preside over the ceremonies at The Velodrome in Abuja, Nigeria on November 22, 2008.
