Oh Mama, Those MAMAs!
The MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMAs) with Zain were off the chain this year. Wyclef Jean was in the house with several of the best artists in contemporary African music today. Akon was one of the guest performers and the audience was treated to a class-A performance.
For some reason though, Akon and Wyclef stripped to their skivvies. Guess it was all in good fun, but I wonder how many parents made their children turn off the television. It is also a surprise that there was no uproar in the local media about it. Kenya must be getting more permissive.

Tribe X Entertainment – Making African Entertainment Mainstream
Tribe X Entertainment has a simple mission. To promote talent from Africa and help make Nollywood and other african actors and movies as mainstream, if not more so, than Bollywood. Talent from Nigeria has drawn the interest of various people in the Diaspora including Akon. Movies have been made about Nollywood (Nollywood Babylon, This is Nollywood, etc.), and MTV Base is hosting it’s second MTV Africa Music Awards in Nairobi, Kenya. People are definitely taking notice. Wyclef hosts 2009 MAMAs
The prolific artist, musician, writer and producer will be jetting into Nairobi, Kenya to take command of the stage at the MTV Africa Music Awards with Zain on 10 October 2009, bringing his legendary showmanship, outrageous sense of humor and infinite enthusiasm to the Indoor Arena of the Moi International Sports Complex.

KENYA: To host the 2009 MTV Africa Music Awards
MTV African and telecommunication company Zain, have proudly released in a statement that Nairobi, Kenya will be home to the 2009 MTV Africa Music Awards. The event will take place on Saturday, October 10, 2009 at the Indoor Arena at the Moi International Sports Center with 1 billion viewers around the world expected to watch.

There are lots of rumors and speculation following media reception invites circulated late last week by MTV Networks Africa, and leading mobile phone operator, Zain. Selected individuals representing government, tourism, media and entertainment in Kenya, will attend a much anticipated, exclusive, media reception on Wednesday 15 April at the Blue Times Lounge in Nairobi, where its promised that “the Date, City and Venue for this year’s glittering ceremony,” the 2009 MTV Africa Music Awards with Zain (MAMA), will be revealed.
Asa – The Revelation/Revolution Of A Nigerian Soul
Not only has she been nominated for both the “Artist of the Year” and the “Best Female Act” at the 2008 MTV Africa Music Awards, but Asa was also nominated for the “Best African Act” at the 2008 MOBO Awards beside trailblazing artists like Estelle and Dizzee Rascal. Born in Paris but Nigerian-raised, Asa is a product of two Nigerian parents who, when she was only two, returned back to settle in the “New York City” of Nigeria–Lagos.
As a child growing up with a music lover for a father, she listened to the likes of Fela Kuti, Sunny Ade, Bob Marley, Aretha Franklen, Marvin Gaye, Lagbaja, and Ebenezer Obey. It was obviously time destined for her to answer to her musical call. Drawing inspiration from all the artists that she listened to growing up, Asa started connecting all the elements that make her the trailblazing artist she is.

MAMA -MTV Africa Music Awards pick Trevor Nelson to Host
Well, it’s official. The MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMA) with Zain, have started their hunt for the best in African music, and the excitement is hitting a frenzied pitch. Music of Black Origin (MOBO) award winning DJ and television presenter, Trevor Nelson, is slated to preside over the ceremonies at The Velodrome in Abuja, Nigeria on November 22, 2008.

Yes, finally African artists can look beyond a mere tokenism for their hard work as MTV Networks plans to launch an African version of its signature annual music awards. We no longer have to scramble for a single award at the MTV European Music Awards (EMA).
