Salif Keita to perform in New York and DC

Written by Shirlene Alusa-Brown | April 5, 2011 | Leave a Comment

Salif Keita is scheduled to perform in New York on April 9, 2011 at the Apollo Theater and will also be at an afterparty with fellow Malian musician, Amkoullel.  This is indeed a treat for those who are avid fans of Keita.  Originally from Bamako, Mali, Salif Keita has been sharing African music with the Diaspora for over 20 years.  Born an albino with a royal lineage (he is a direct descendant of Sundiata Keita, founder of the Mali Empire), he was cast out of his family (albinism is seen as cursed) and ended up a singer (frowned upon as this is a griot’s role and not one befitting a person of royal lineage).  It is usually out of pain  and hurt that some of the most poignant music is developed and we are not disappointed in Keita.

SALIF KEITA: ‘La Difference’

Written by Prudence Chauke | November 16, 2009 | Leave a Comment

l_89de8dad1c0147159549b2bd2c56d16cToday’s marks the release of Salif Keita’s new studio album, ‘La  Difference (The Difference)’, one of his most anticipated album . The course behind this album is to benefit a charitable foundation that raises awareness against the Albino fight. Money raised from this album will go towards the pursuit of strengthening the support system for Albinos and the changes needed to be made in support to allow them to be treated like other people.  It also calls for an end to the discrimination towards them.

In a press release statement Salif Keita asks all nations to support him in this quest by buying the album and not resulting to piracy and bootleg materials. ‘La Difference‘  is a twelve track album from Salif’s previously recorded tracks, and a few new ones. Some of the songs are meant to take the listeners on a journey towards what it really means to be an Albino, but it  is a celebration for humanity and equality. Very moving !

Alicia Keys said, “Her voice is captivating; even though I can’t understand what she is saying, I understand what she’s saying.”
