“Princess of Africa” screens at the African Diaspora Film Festival

Princess of Africa

So, last Sunday, I decided to check out a film that screened at the African Diaspora Film Festival. The festival, which started November 28th, is scheduled to conclude on December 14th. As I’ve been looking at the festival guide, I have been circling those films which spark my interest. I came across Princess of Africa, which is a film by Juan Laguna, shot in both Senegal and Europe. The film juxtaposes two stories: that of Marem, a 14 year-old Senegalese dancer and Sonia, a Spanish dancer. The two have very different lives, but what links them is Marem’s father, Pap Ndiaye, who is also Sonia’s husband. Pap, however has two other wives, in Senegal, who don’t seem to mind that Pap is also married to Sonia. However, the viewer doesn’t really get an insight into what the Senegalese wives think about the arrangement; I wasn’t really buying that they were okay with this. But then again, I wasn’t offered much insight into their lives. » Read more…

Diouf Makes Sunderland Switch

El-Hadji Diouf has moved to Sunderland for $5 million as the Black Cats continue their rebuilding plans ahead of the new Premier League season. Diouf leaves Bolton Wanderers, and has inked a four-year deal at the Stadium of Light after passing a medical and agreeing personal terms. The Senegalese international had been seeking a move away from Bolton since the end of last season and Sunderland have now taken him to Wearside.

NIX is a great rap artist from Senegal who is now based in France. Influenced by the sounds of Doug E Fresh, Kool Moe Dee, Father MC, Public Enemy, he was inspired to try and follow in their footsteps. It was the discovery of french rappers like MC Solaar, Assassin, NTM, and IAM that led him to decide to make a mark as a Senegalese rapper. He formed the group, Kantiolis, with his friends Ibrahim, Bap’ S and GeSer and they won best rap group in 1994 and 1995. » Read more…
