Okyeame Kwame, Praye and Others shine at 10th Ghana Music Awards

After endless speculations, criticisms, and a long wait, the 10th edition of the annual Ghana Music Awards was finally held last Saturday at the Dome of the Accra Conference Center to a sold-out audience. The biggest ceremony saw Okyeame Kwame winning the Artiste of the Year. Although the 2008 was described as the most competitive year for the Ghana Music Awards, favorites Okyeame Kwame, Praye and Christiana Love came up tops on the night filled with excitement, cheers and some few surprises.

Tic Tac still strong after 10 years

One of Africa’s most prolific hip-hop artists, Tic Tac, has launched his 6th album titled, ‘The Tenth Day’ to mark his 10th year in the game. He describes his new album as a classic. “It is lyrically strong. Production wise, it’s second to none and I think it is a fantastic and classic album”. It also features collaborations with Keynote (Nigeria), Tinny, Okyeame Kwame and Asem; with productions by Seven, Jam Master J, Quick Action and several others.

MTN honours Ghana’s Finest Icons

michael-essien.jpgMTN has marked its first year anniversary in Ghana by honoring some of Ghana’s biggest icons in sports, arts and culture. The event which was dubbed, ‘Ghana’s Finest Icons’ honored the likes of Jerry Hanson, leader of the world-acclaimed Ramblers International Band; and Professor Atuquaye Okai, a world-reknowned poet, and president of the Pan-African Writers Association. The Accra Hearts of Oak football club was also honored for their glorious achievements in league football on the local and continental scene. All inductees of the MTN Ghana’s Finest Icon received a plaque and 10,000 USD.

The special anniversary celebration was marked with fashion shows and music performances by some Ghanaian music icons such as Kojo Antwi, Amakye Dede, Oheneba Kissi, the Winneba Youth Choir, Obrafour, Tic Tac and Samini. Samini, Kojo Antwi, and Black Stars’ star players Stephen Appiah and Michael Essien were also unveiled as MTN music and football icons. Essien’s mother was available to represent her son, the darling of Ghanaian soccer.

Nas, Freshly Ground, Tic Tac and others Shake Nigeria

Watch out MTV, African music channels are giving you a run for your money. Following a great tradition that was started by Channel O, African music videos are now getting the recognition they deserve. The Soundcity Music Video Awards (SMVA) is the newest kid on the block. The first ever SMVA took place recently at the Shell Hall of the prestigious MUSON Centre. Soundcity is Nigeria’s first and foremost lifestyle, music and entertainment television channel and the award ceremony lived up to its billing. It was filled with all the glitz, glamour and quality entertainment.The Awards was telecast live on cable and terrestrial television, with commentaries on radio transmitted across Africa, the United States, the United Kingdom, and some other parts of Europe. US hip hop legend, Nas was on hand to thrill patrons with exciting performances of his hit songs one after the other. There were also amazing performances from the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Musical Society of Nigeria, Tony Teteuila, Eedris Abdulkareem and Eddy Montana of the Remedies. South Africa’s mega group, Freshly Ground, Ghana’s Tic Tac, P Square, D’Banj, Don Jazzy and the Mo’Hits Crew, Nato C, Ikechukwu, Sasha, Kaffy, and Question Mark All Stars also brought their exceptional talents to bear on the event. It was hosted by D’Banj, Ashionye and fast-rising comedian AY.
