CAF African Women’s Championship Kicks Off
Amidst little fanfare, the sixth edition of the CAF African Women’s Championship kicked off this past weekend in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea. Backed by a ferocious home support, Equatorial Guinea pulled off what must surely be the upset of the tournament so far, by beating perennial powerhouse, Cameroon 1-0. In the other Group A match, Mali slumped to a 0-1 defeat against Congo.
Super Falcons to Clash With Black Queens
Nigeria will take on great rivals Ghana in their opening match of the African Women’s Championship in November. The pair have been drawn together in Group B of the tournament, which is hosted by Equatorial Guinea. South Africa and Tunisia are the other two teams in the group. Group A features the hosts, plus Cameroon, Mali, and Congo-Brazzaville. Nigeria’s Super Falcons have won every edition of the championship so far, but they failed to make it to the knock-out stages of the recent Olympic tournament in Beijing.
Esperance win 2008 Tunisia FA Cup
Hicham Aboucherouane struck twice as Esperance beat Etoile du Sahel 2-1 to win the Tunisian FA Cup on Saturday. The Moroccan international gave Esperance a 12th minute lead after a defesive mix-up by the Etoile rearguard. The lead was short-lived, as Mehdi Meriah equalized within five minutes for last year’s African Champions League winners. However, Aboucherouane was to have the last word. With 11 minutes left on the clock, he pounced to score the winner and ensure a record breaking 12th cup success for the Blood and Gold.
Africas Premier Rugby tournament: The Tusker Safari Sevens
Africa’s Premier Rugby tournament, the Tusker Safari Sevens, comes alive this weekend again in Nairobi Kenya. The event, in its 13th year of existence, sees 16 top class teams chase for honors once again. This years tournament is in itself a milestone as rugby 7’s powerhouses step into Nairobi for the first time ever to take part in this tournament. One can remember that 3 years ago Fijian rugby great, Waisale Serevi, graced the tournament where he played for Kenya Shujaa as a guest player. France and Japan will be making their second appearance in Kenya and going nothing short of victory. (The last time the French were here, they almost never left F2. This time they aim to succeed!)
