Mic Check: Hip-hop from North Africa and the Middle East

The Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) is producing a hip-hop show with several prominent rappers from the North Africa and Middle East, including Amkoullel of Mali. The show, Mic Check: Hip-hop from North Africa and the Middle East is scheduled for March 9, 2013 at 7:30 p.m. at BAM.

London Olympics 2012: Nigeria and Senegal advance in respective games

The Nigerian basketball team played hard to win their basketball game against Tunisia, ending it with a 60-56 score.  They are currently ranked second in Group A, behind the United States.  Tunisia is third, and France fourth.  The game was very close and the win hard earned.  Their next game is against Lithuania on July 31, 2012 at 2:30 p.m.  Tunisia will play the United States on July 31, 2012 at 8:15 p.m.  To see the full schedule of games, go to the London 2012 website.

Senegal won their soccer game against Uruguay 2-0 to advance to the next round.  They are ranked second in Group A below Great Britain.  Their next opponents are the United Arab Emirates, ranked fourth in Group A, on August 1, 2012. Kenyan and South African Photographers win prestigious Photoafrica awards in Spain

June 12th, Tarifa, Spain – Photographers from South Africa and Kenya won prestigious awards at fourth Photoafrica contest, which took place within 8th African Film Festival of Tarifa. The first place award, endowed with €1,500, went to Jessica MacLeod from South Africa for her photograph titled “You see a shack, I see my house”.  The second place award, endowed with €1,000, went to James Muriuki from Kenya for the photograph  titled “44”.  Third place, endowed with €500, went to Mimi Cherono from Kenya with the photograph titled “Khusi and the Giraffes”.

It was incredibly difficult to decide about winners, as the fourth edition of Photoafrica experienced a record number of over 400 entries and once again proved the unique potential and quality of African photographers”, says Pablo Juliá, chairman of the jury and director of the Andalusian Center Of Photography.

CAF African Women’s Championship Kicks Off

Amidst little fanfare, the sixth edition of the CAF African Women’s Championship kicked off this past weekend in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea. Backed by a ferocious home support, Equatorial Guinea pulled off what must surely be the upset of the tournament so far, by beating perennial powerhouse, Cameroon 1-0. In the other Group A match, Mali slumped to a 0-1 defeat against Congo.

Super Falcons to Clash With Black Queens

Nigeria will take on great rivals Ghana in their opening match of the African Women’s Championship in November. The pair have been drawn together in Group B of the tournament, which is hosted by Equatorial Guinea. South Africa and Tunisia are the other two teams in the group. Group A features the hosts, plus Cameroon, Mali, and Congo-Brazzaville. Nigeria’s Super Falcons have won every edition of the championship so far, but they failed to make it to the knock-out stages of the recent Olympic tournament in Beijing.

Esperance win 2008 Tunisia FA Cup

Esperance win 2008 Tunisia FA CupHicham Aboucherouane struck twice as Esperance beat Etoile du Sahel 2-1 to win the Tunisian FA Cup on Saturday. The Moroccan international gave Esperance a 12th minute lead after a defesive mix-up by the Etoile rearguard. The lead was short-lived, as Mehdi Meriah equalized within five minutes for last year’s African Champions League winners. However, Aboucherouane was to have the last word. With 11 minutes left on the clock, he pounced to score the winner and ensure a record breaking 12th cup success for the Blood and Gold.

Africas Premier Rugby tournament: The Tusker Safari Sevens

Africa’s Premier Rugby tournament, the Tusker Safari Sevens, comes alive this weekend again in Nairobi Kenya. The event, in its 13th year of existence, sees 16 top class teams chase for honors once again. This years tournament is in itself a milestone as rugby 7′s powerhouses step into Nairobi for the first time ever to take part in this tournament. One can remember that 3 years ago Fijian rugby great, Waisale Serevi, graced the tournament where he played for Kenya Shujaa as a guest player. France and Japan will be making their second appearance in Kenya and going nothing short of victory. (The last time the French were here, they almost never left F2. This time they aim to succeed!)
