Nigeria's Falcons look to defend crown for fifth straight time

Amidst little fanfare, the sixth edition of the CAF African Women’s Championship kicked off this past weekend in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea. Backed by a ferocious home support, Equatorial Guinea pulled off what must surely be the upset of the tournament so far, by beating perennial powerhouse, Cameroon 1-0. In the other Group A match, Mali slumped to a 0-1 defeat against Congo.

In Group B, the so-called ‘group of death,’ arch-rivals — five-times defending champions the Falcons of Nigeria and Ghana’s Black Queens played to a 1-1 stalemate. In a later kickoff, South Africa’s Bayana Bayana took advantage of the earlier lackluster result by the “Big Two” to see off the weakest team of the group Tunisia with a 2-1 victory in Bata, the second host city.

Fierce rivals drawn in same group for African Championship

Nigeria will take on great rivals Ghana in their opening match of the African Women’s Championship in November. The pair have been drawn together in Group B of the tournament, which is hosted by Equatorial Guinea. South Africa and Tunisia are the other two teams in the group. Group A features the hosts, plus Cameroon, Mali, and Congo-Brazzaville. Nigeria’s Super Falcons have won every edition of the championship so far, but they failed to make it to the knock-out stages of the recent Olympic tournament in Beijing.

Veteran star Perpetua Nkwocha told the BBC that their group would be a difficult one. “I think its a little bit tough, because South Africa and Ghana are in the group with us. This is the first time we are in this kind of group, but there’s no problem for Nigeria, we are not afraid of any African teams.” She admitted that she knew little about Tunisia. “It’ll be good for us not to play them in the first game, so that we know how they are playing and can study them well.

“Nigeria’s group will play in Bata whilst group A will take place in the capital, Malabo. The tournament takes place between 15 and 29 November.

The Moroccan international gave Esperance a 12th minute lead after a defesive mix-up by the Etoile rearguard. The lead was short-lived, as Mehdi Meriah equalized within five minutes for last year’s African Champions League winners. However, Aboucherouane was to have the last word. With 11 minutes left on the clock, he pounced to score the winner and ensure a record breaking 12th cup success for the Blood and Gold.

Kenyan hosts the Rugby Sevens' powerhouses for the first time ever

Africa’s Premier Rugby tournament, the Tusker Safari Sevens, comes alive this weekend again in Nairobi Kenya. The event, in its 13th year of existence, sees 16 top class teams chase for honors once again. This years tournament is in itself a milestone as rugby 7’s powerhouses step into Nairobi for the first time ever to take part in this tournament. One can remember that 3 years ago Fijian rugby great, Waisale Serevi, graced the tournament where he played for Kenya Shujaa as a guest player. France and Japan will be making their second appearance in Kenya and going nothing short of victory. (The last time the French were here, they almost never left F2. This time they aim to succeed!)

The Emerging Boks from South Africa are the defending champions and Kenya will be hard pressed to win the diadem that has eluded them on home soil for the last four years.

With Fiji leading the quality field in town, this promises to be a highly competitive event let alone a quality one. Other teams gracing the event are Japan, France, Bristol University Select, Samurai, Paris University, Shujaa, Uganda, Tanzania, Tunisia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Namibia and Botswana.

Kenya have just completed taking part in the IRB Sevens series 2007/8 where they finished 7th thus confirming their status as a top 10 rugby sevens’ nation globally. The onus is now on the them to prove that they can beat the best in the world right here at home. Kenyans at home and abroad will be rooting for their team very patriotically as it has proven time and time again rugby does bring people people together. At this time of healing the Tusker Safari Sevens is absolutely the right tonic. This is going going to be one festive weekend. Tusker, Tusker, Tusker!

Go Kenya, Go Kenya! Good luck boys!

Controversially the Kenyan Coach, Benjamin Ayimba, has stated on radio that this tournament is not a priority for him as his focus is the 2009 Sevens World Cup in Dubai. Come on Benja, Charity begins at home! Show a bit more loyalty to the homeland. What do the Kenya Rugby Football Union have to say on this??

Kenya:

Humphrey Kayange (c), Lavin Asego (v/c), Allan Onyango, Victor Sudi, Moses Mwolle, Horace Owiti, Inocent Simiyu, Joshua Gathumbi, Victor Opong, Collins Injera, Biko Adema, Brian Nyikuli.

Coach: Benjamin Ayimba

Kenya Shujaa:

Allan Makaka (c), Nato Simiyu (v/c), Leon Adongo, Owen Ocholla, Naftali Bondo, Philip Moturi, Matthew Musita, Wilson Kopondo, Andrew Amonde, George Mbaye, Samuel Wefwafwa, Malik Ndemi.

Coach: Felix Ochieng
