Blatter Dismisses World Cup 2010 ‘Plan B’
FIFA president Sepp Blatter has dismissed ditching South Africa as 2010 World Cup hosts saying there is ”no Plan B.” Blatter had revealed earlier this year that FIFA had put together contingency plans in light of South Africa’s perceived ill-preparation, causing a flurry of speculation about possible alternative hosts — including Germany, hosts of the last World Cup finals in 2006.
Tricky Fixtures Await in Final Round of 2010 Qualifying
Africa’s top-ranked soccer team, Cameroon, were handed a tricky route to the 2010 World Cup after being drawn Wednesday against Morocco, Gabon, and Togo in Group A of the continent’s third and final qualifying stage. The group will also see Cameroon’s German coach Otto Pfister pit his wits against the Togo side which he coached during a chaotic 2006 World Cup campaign with players threatening to strike over allegedly unpaid bonuses.
FIFA Promises Free Tickets for Workers
Construction workers at the 2010 World Cup stadia sites have been promised 40,000 tickets for games during the finals in South Africa. The move was announced by FIFA president, Sepp Blatter, at the end of his four day visit to the host country. There are more than 20,000 workers employed at the 10 sites of the stadiums being built or renovated for the tournament, and FIFA plans to provide each one of the workers with two tickets. That accounts for a third of the allocation of the 120,000 free tickets set aside earlier for South Africans “who have contributed to the success of the 2010 FIFA World Cup and who could otherwise not afford to be part of this historic event.”
Blatter was in the country to inspect the progress of the construction of the host venues, which are set to cost around $1.2bn. In spite of his severe criticism of the progress of construction at the sites during previous visits, he said it would be a “magnificent event.” » Read more…
FIFA Considering Alternative WC 2010 Host
FIFA president, Sepp Blatter, claims he has spoken to three countries about hosting the 2010 World Cup if a natural disaster forces it away from South Africa. This is part of “Plan B” drawn up by FIFA with less than two years until the pinnacle of world sport heads to Africa for the first time.
