Music meets Football at CAF Awards

Written by Ameyaw Debrah | February 11, 2009 | Leave a Comment

ycc.jpgThe 2008 Glo CAF Awards held in Lagos, Nigeria Tuesday, was a marriage between some of the best footballers in Africa and some top-notch African musicians. The glitzy award ceremony hosted by Christopher Bongo and Bimbo Oloyede was not all about honoring the best footballers and teams on the continent; it was splashed with delightful performances by great African musicians like Yvonne Chaka Chaka of South Africa, King Mensah of Togo and the amazing Yossou N’ Dour.

Nigeria’s dynamic R&B duo P-Square, Ishmael from South Africa and a host of other musicians also joined the train to put some life into the otherwise boring ceremony filled with long speeches and technical hitches. Perhaps the organizers should have paid a little more attention to the technical issues such as cueing playbacks properly, checking microphones et cetera instead of turning the event into a promotional campaign for Glo, the title sponsors of the awards. » Read more…

African artists represent at the 51st, 2009 Grammy Nomination Ceremony

Written by Prudence Chauke | December 9, 2008 | Leave a Comment

Africa was well represented at the 51st 2009 Grammy nomination ceremony.  I witnessed African artists walk away with Grammy nominations and put us on the map musically.

Estelle leads the pack of Africans with the most nominations for “American Boy“, followed by the legendary Youssou N’Dour for “Rokku mi Rokka (Give and Take)” and the Soweto Gospel Choir for “Live at the Nelson Mandela Theater Album” under Best Contemporary World Music Album. And, finally, adding to the number of African hopefuls, is the world’s most loved African traditional group who have already won two Grammies in past years. » Read more…

‘RocknRolla’ premiered in London and Youssou N’dour was in Colorado at the 35th Telluride Festival.  Celestina Aladekoba helped premiere a CD.

Estelle’s label, Warner, removed her album from iTunes, in a bid to force people to purchase the entire album.  No word yet on whether it will help or hurt her. » Read more…

ThisDay Africa Rising Festival in Washington DC

Written by Shirlene Alusa-Brown | August 5, 2008 | Leave a Comment

The ThisDay Africa Rising Festival in Washington DC was a great affair. With appearances by Youssou N’dour, John Legend, and Jay-Z, and the wonderful fashions by Deola Sagoe, Momo, and Chris Aire, it was a night to remember.

The show started about 45 minutes late due to some technical difficulties. Emcees Washington Post columnist and Associate Editor, Eugene Robinson, and newscaster Paula Zahn, kept the flow going between performances. My only peeve was that, although this was called Thisday Africa Rising Festival, the emphasis was on Jay-Z and John Legend. I thought the idea was to present the talent that is rampant in Africa. I was surprised to note that the people seated around me (press, no less), were unaware of the fame and respect the African performers on the roster command. It appears that Eugene Robinson and Paula Zahn weren’t completely aware either. I wasn’t the only one who thought so. » Read more…
